It was a cool October morning when I met Merv in that storm drain, during a time when I felt like my art career was in the toilet.

His cuteness drew me in like a moth to a flame and I decided I’d help him out by letting him crash on our porch. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was helping me too by giving me something new to focus on (keeping him alive and away from Reggie’s food bowl, mostly).

Tips for illustrated poems

  • If you get stuck on the writing, DRAW! If you get stuck on the drawing, WRITE!

  • Don’t even try to rhyme at first. Think about what you want to say first, and write/draw that!

  • Speak each sentence aloud as you normally would to figure out the syllable stresses1, or which words you emphasized in the sentence. My dear, sweet, musical spouse taught me that!

  • Watch the video in this post, here I share my process! Also, come draw with us in upcoming sessions and we can chat about it!
