Creating clever compositions

Loosely following a format from my college days

Back in my college days, when I wasn’t singing Lady Gaga at a karaoke bar, I was learning to design newspaper pages. That’s where I learned the basic elements of creating a clever layout are:

I let these principles loosely guide me when I draw.

It's fun to bend and twist the rules until they almost snap. Elements might float off the page, blow up to fill the whole page, or fade into the background.

Prompt:

Make a compositional study, using CRAP to inform your choices.

Remember, you’re not making a newspaper, so these aren’t rigid rules. They’re friendly suggestions that’re easy to remember, because… well, they spell the word “CRAP.”

In the video

I do a compositional study using a VERY scrappy sketch of my kitchen, then make a little mixed media piece. Then, because I had so much fun drawing the first one, I make another one on the fly.
