Springing into Sketchbook Joy

An observational drawing prompt

A few weeks ago, a friend told me on the phone “you never seem stressed.” I said “Carol, that’s because you only see me when I’m drawing!”

Observational sketching won’t melt problems away, but it can make us better at solving them by getting us out of our heads for a bit.

A few other things drawing from life can help with

  • pulling ideas out of hiding

  • reducing screen time

  • lowering the volume on a rude inner critic

Showing up and drawing your houseplants, pets, or appliances does magical things for your brain. You don’t have to make a masterpiece or even finish your drawing.

We go out to my new backyard, which is bursting with spring vibes, and draw this tiny gnome from every conceivable angle.
