This one was a bit different. Instead of sharing references, Char, Michelle, and I share our workspaces, as we all all drew from our own school pictures. I’ll bring back references in the next two sessions, but it was fun to mix things up!

This month’s theme is Backyard Animals!

The days get even shorter in September. It’s the perfect month to enjoy nature before the sun starts dipping at 3pm! Join me and sketch our furry, feathered, and scaly neighbors.

This is the time to draw outside, sketch in the garden, and paint on your porch. Here are a few ways to get excited, including the return of Color of the Month!

Mostly because everyone made lovely, inspiring art and we got to chat with . But also because it was my very first power outage in a session! I’m glad I checked the “mobile hotspot” box when I signed up for my internet plan.

We all brought our own reference images, or drew from imagination. I sketched a few scrappy squirrels from an old field guide before dressing them up in clothes. I shared some tips in Draw Yourself as an Animal post.

Every week I round up a set of seven photos that make me say “I NEED to draw this.” After fantasizing about how I’ll draw them, I write my ideas down. I package the photos and ideas in a Substack post to send to Introvert Drawing Club members. It’s always inspiring to see how each person draws the images1.

I always plan to draw them too, but sometimes I get caught up working on other things. Next thing I know, there are three cats on my desk telling me “it’s dinner time.”

This week, instead of fantasizing about drawing the images, I actually sat down and sketched them! I also filmed the whole process.

Here’s what I made using this week’s images and the prompts that got me started.

Prompt: Start with a material you haven’t used in a while.

Prompt: Draw in grayscale for five minutes, then add color.

Prompt: Draw the full shape of the man using continuous line, then add the duck’s head.

Here’s a video on continuous line cats, if you’d like a refresher!

Prompt: Draw as much as you can using one material to this song.

When I look in the mirror and see a huge smudge of graphite on my cheek, I know I’ve had a good day.

I know not everyone is a fan of getting filthy when making art, though. So I found a way to use graphite powder to create rich textures and tone without creating a storm of grey dust every time I use it.

After several sleepless nights wondering how I’d weave it into my arsenal of art supplies, the idea struck me: PUT IT IN A WATERBRUSH. This gives me easy access to gorgeous, gritty textures that mix beautifully with my paints. I can build up tone in treetops, sketch loosely on location, and basically have a tin of Artgraf at my fingertips.

I’ve been using graphite powder in the same cheap, ratty waterbrush for more than a month now without a single clog. This is a serious artistic achievement. Do they issue awards for things like this? They really should.

✏️Why not just use a pencil?

I love pencils! But sometimes they switch on my perfectionism. When I’m drawing to access ideas, I need that part of my brain to be locked into the OFF position. So the graphite powder in a waterbrush is my new best friend.
