Some worked, others not so much. The experimentation led me to my current process. Using the magic of technology, I beam written words from paper to screen, then add them to my art. The biggest leaps in improving my letters happen before the art even hits the scanner. Since several of you asked, I’m sharing my updated, ever-evolving words-and-pictures process, along with a prompt so you can practice.

Slow down

While I love a bit of chaos in my drawing, letters need to be clear and legible. For this reason, I draw letters at 0.25x speed. This snail’s pace ensures each character is clear and readable.

Revisiting older posts, like this one, I wish I could hop into a time machine and tell Beth from the past this tip. She was writing way too fast!

Don’t start over

Let’s say I’m in the middle of writing the word “SARDINE” and the letter D looks more like an O. It’s best to finish the word, then draw a few extra D’s that I can replace it with in Photoshop. Embrace the wonky D!

I always use a dark pencil, 6B or higher. Black ink, crayon, or colored pencil work well to create a strong contrast. I usually change the color in Photoshop, which I go into in the video at the top of this post!

I love indigo1, in all its moody darkness, but let’s look at some other ways we can work with this cool blue hue.

Mix the dreamiest greens you’ve ever seen.

Yellow and indigo combine to create magical greens like what you’re seeing behind the lions below.

Create chromatic blacks

Layer liquid watercolor or ink on top of orange to create stunning chromatic black that’s more original than anything you’ll find in a bottle.

Mute it and dilute it

I muted indigo with white gouache to start the coffee shop sketch, then went full intensity for the dark areas. Aren’t the textures delicious?

Indigo in action:

In the video, watch how I build layers of liquid watercolor to create the owl illustration below. I also swatch and compare several indigo materials, and how I mix it from primaries.

More fun ways to explore indigo:

• Draw an Insect Tea Party

• Sketch some snow globes and use indigo as your background (too early?)

• Play the Unlikely Friends Animal Drawing Game

• Get meditative and sketch a manatee slowly

Draw the whale shark twice as big as the others

Don’t be afraid to let your drawing overlap and go off the page. Try to stick to 1 or 2 colors. 2 minutes per shark. You can always come back and finish later! (More on finishing here :)

There are many reasons to love the muted magnificence of the color buff titanium. Here are my top three:

1. Colors like turquoise and opera pink appear even punchier next to its sandy beige beauty.

2. It’s accident friendly. If you make a mistake in buff titanium, it’s easy to cover up and pretend said mistake never happened.

3. It’s easy to make it from muddy paint sludge that accumulates on my travel palette.

My top three materials:

If I could dream a buff titanium art supply into existence, it would be a Neocolor II. If you know someone with decision-making power at Caran d’Ache, could you kindly let them know we need it?

In the video for paid members:

I share my process for mixing buff titanium using primary colors, then paint the lovely owl statue that I brought back from my grandparents’ house. I included a reference image below, so you can draw or paint along with me. I know my grandmother will love to see your lovely version of her owls! 🦉💕

Then I challenged you to draw yourself as anthropomorphic animal of your choice.

I took great delight in seeing so many charming, original animal characters! Allow me to introduce the five characters that I couldn’t stop thinking about.

1. Ladatko Ekaterina

Meet Ladatko Ekaterina as a charming dog character. When I reached out to ask permission to share, I asked what materials made that fantastic coat pattern:

“It’s oil pastel. I just learnt how to do the grattage technique and thought I’d give it a go for this art challenge.”

2. Miriam Serafin

When I met Miriam the boar, my heart did the same little dance it does when cookies are buy one get one free. I love the endless charm, looseness, layering, and how the colors feel so free and intuitively chosen. I want to see more of this boar!

3. Elizabeth Leyk

Elizabeth put so much love and care into every little detail here. The legs of the table. Exquisite colors. The acorn lampshade!

4. Laura Silveira

This is the kind of artwork that makes me want to try collage again! These two look like they have a lot of fun together.

5. Claire Goble

I love how Claire used negative space to define these characters, and how she drew herself doing part of her own routine:

“I’ve spent a LOT of the summer holidays driving my children to football camps.”

Vote for your favorite!
